A Sad No-Show Ride

Sad day driving today.

A corporate client had a cousin in Newport who was battling lung cancer. She needed to get up to New Bern every few weeks for tests and doctor’s appointments and John asked if I would please drive Kim – which I was pleased to do … then John generously took care of the bill.

Kim became interested in ‘learn by heart’ and I began sharing a chapter from the audio book with each leg of driving her. I could see how it ministered to her. Thank you, Lord.

I write ‘serving others is a wonderful salve for the blues’ and it was sure true every opportunity I was blessed to spend 45 minutes serving Kim.

Kim asked for transportation support today a couple of weeks ago.

I started the usual cadence of pre-ride texts …

“See you tomorrow 1:30”

“On the way; eta 1:30”

“Here”

Except these texts returned no read-time stamp or response.

My heart almost knew what to expect as I arrived today.

Kim passed a couple of days ago.

Praise God, she is now in a disease-free body. Thank you for allowing me to serve Kim, Lord.

I'm a 61 year old Ride Share Driver, divorced father of 4, with 3 kids still in college. I'm a Combat Veteran, and on Disability after undergoing brain surgery soon after completing my 3d Ironman triathlon. The surgery changed the trajectory of my life. Serving as a 'coachman' and driving others helps me make ends meet, and keep my three kids in college, given allowable income limits set by Social Security. I enjoy serving others and as badly as I need the next buck, I encounter people every day that need it more than I do. Driving invariably brings me to places I can only dream about, so I'm grateful for the inspiration it brings.
